Many anionic surfactants have a dubious reputation as skin irritants. Sodium cocoyl isethionate is a pleasant exception to this rule, a worthy alternative to traditional sulfate surfactants, with good foaming, resistance to hard water, pronounced cleansing ability and an extremely gentle effect on the skin.
Biodegradable, practically non-toxic*, non-sensitiser.

Due to these properties, sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI) has found widespread use in personal care products:
- in liquid, dry and solid shampoos;
- in shower gels, bath foams, soaps, body scrubs (Crystal OPC creamy soap base);
- in shaving foams;
- as a component of toothpastes and dishwashing detergents;
- in makeup removers, in children's washing cosmetics (Baby Foam).

Historically, the use of cocoyl isethionate dates back more than 30 years. Being well studied, this component of washing cosmetics has become popular in North America and Europe.

From a chemical point of view, cocoyl isethionate (SCI) is an ester of sulfur-containing isethionic acid with fatty acids of coconut oil, in the form of sodium salt, being an ingredient of natural origin from renewable plant raw materials, obtained by direct esterification.
In addition to the industrial production of surfactants, isethionic acid serves as the basis for the production of taurine, another well-known biologically active substance, and is also used to obtain some pharmaceutical antimicrobial substances.

The micelles formed by cocoyl isethionate do not penetrate the skin barrier, unlike the smaller micellar structures of lauryl sulfate (SLS), which explains the low irritant effect of SCI.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
- easily combined with other nonionic and amphoteric surfactants, such as decyl-glucoside, coco-glucoside, cocamidopropyl betaine, various surfactants from grape seed oils, cocoa, babassu, almond, palm, with which you can create a complete washing system;
- leaves a silky feeling on the skin, gives a dense, stable creamy foam;

- does not dry out the skin and hair, does not wash out keratin from the hair;

- gives detergents a slip property;

- in solid shampoos it is used to soften the effect of sodium coco-sulfate and produce rich foam; easy to press;

- effective in low concentrations and economical to use.

Input rate: 3-40%**

To introduce it into the composition, the easiest way is to dissolve it in a small amount of hot water in a water bath, stirring the solution periodically. Then mix with other ingredients.

Store in a closed container in a cool place for at least 4 years
Safety: when pouring a large mass of powder granules, it is advisable to use a respirator; If the powder gets into your eyes, rinse thoroughly with water (ocular irritant at concentrations above 50%).

* Oral toxicity: LD50 > 2000 mg/kg

**According to CIR recommendations, up to 50% can be used for rinse-off products and up to 17% for leave-in products.
