Myristyl alcohol is a natural, safe ingredient and an alternative to the denser cetyl stearyl alcohol. An emollient, moisture-retaining agent that gives the skin a velvety feeling. Non-comedogenic, non-toxic.
Stable substance, does not require the use of antioxidants.
From a chemical point of view, it is a saturated fatty alcohol with a straight chain and 14 carbon atoms, the closest analogue of which is myristic fatty acid. It is found in significant quantities in coconut, palm kernel oils, and babassu oil. Historically, it was first isolated from nutmeg (lat. Myristica Fragrans), which is where it got its name.
Many fatty alcohols, along with myristyl alcohol, serve as raw materials for the production of foaming detergents (surfactants).
Fatty alcohols with a chain length of more than 25 carbon atoms form various waxes in the composition of esters.
In cosmetics it is used as:
- emulsion stabilizer and thickener for creams, lotions*; prevents moisture evaporation, softens the skin;
- emollient, co-emulsifier, conditioning additive in masks, balms, hair conditioners, facilitates combing;
- odor fixer;
- the main structure-forming agent in the composition of deodorants, antiperspirants, and solid perfumes.
Can be used in decorative cosmetics (makes lipsticks easier to apply).
Myristyl alcohol is preferred in formulations for oily and combination skin, while cetyl stearyl and other long-chain alcohols (e.g. behenyl) are good for dry and/or aging skin where occlusive properties are important and there is no risk of overloading the skin. refractory components of the fatty phase.
Also, lightweight Ercanol is promising for improving the consistency and consumer qualities of solid foaming detergents - these are body oil bars, solid shampoos, solid shower gels and solid conditioners.
