Lanolin
Attention! Lanolin has a specific odor inherent to this type of wax.
Lanolin is a type of wax that is extracted during the washing of sheep's wool. Unrefined it looks like a viscous yellowish-brown, sharp-smelling substance. For cosmetic and medical purposes it is used exclusively in purified form. After cleaning, it changes color to yellow and loses its unpleasant odor.
Lanolin, unlike other types of wax, contains a lot of sterols. This animal wax melts at a temperature of 36 to 42 degrees Celsius.
The mass of iodine in 100 grams ranges from 18 to 36 percent. The acidity is about 2 ml, and the humidity is no more than 25%. Lanolin is completely insoluble in water, but can dissolve in mineral or vegetable oil. It is quite stable and can remain viscous at low temperatures and at different humidity levels. Resistant to water, it is able to absorb large quantities of it and remain just as viscous.
Lanolin contains various esters, higher fatty acids and free high-molecular alcohols. Its composition is so complex that even today it remains not fully understood.
Lanolin is well stored and has low chemical activity. It has a great ability to create emulsions. Lanolin can produce twice its weight in water, slightly less glycerol, and almost half its weight in ethanol.
Despite the fact that it itself does not dissolve in water, a small amount of this substance helps hydrocarbons and fats better combine with water and its various solutions.
Valuable properties of lanolin
1. Lanolin perfectly softens the skin and has high absorbency. The latter is due to the fact that its properties are very similar to those of human sebum. Penetrating deep into the skin, lanolin carries a whole range of useful substances, which makes it especially valuable as a cosmetic component.
2. This is a very nourishing product for the skin, which also has a powerful protective effect. Cream with the addition of lanolin can protect the skin from frost, wind and other adverse factors.
3. The ability to be absorbed into the skin and retain a large percentage of moisture makes lanolin a powerful moisturizer. After using lanolin, the skin will regain elasticity and freshness for a long time. In fact, it is a strong anti-aging agent that prevents the skin from aging.
Where is lanolin used?
Taking into account all the above properties, it is used to create a cream that saturates the skin with moisture and restores its youth. Lanolin is often included in various ointments, often mixed with other substances. For mothers who breastfeed, they produce lanolin free of impurities, which is used to heal painful cracks. Since this wax is absolutely safe for babies, it does not need to be removed before feeding.
The high degree of water absorption makes it a first-class remedy for relieving inflammation and cooling the skin. Lanolin is also a food additive with code E913
It is used:
• as part of various emulsions;
• with anhydrous treatment;
• as a component of medicinal ointments and creams for skin lesions;
• as a component of healing agents;
• as a means for transporting beneficial substances deep into the skin;
• as a component of children's cosmetics;
• as a remedy for nursing women;
• as a component of medicinal eye ointments;
• as a component of protective cosmetics;
• as a basis for various cosmetics;
• when creating decorative cosmetic products.
However, its amount in various cosmetics often does not exceed ten percent.
The popularity of lanolin is also due to its absolute safety. Since it is widely used in the production of cosmetics, it is constantly subjected to a variety of tests. It can be found in virtually any medical and pharmacological register, and permission for its use is confirmed by the second amendment to the International Cosmetics Directive. There are rare cases when a person becomes allergic to this substance and the skin begins to turn red and itch.
The way to check for an allergic reaction to lanolin is standard. Just apply a little of the new cream to the delicate skin of your wrist and wait a little.
Lanolin itself is used quite rarely. Its viscosity can close the pores of the skin, and it is quite difficult to apply it to the body.
