Papain
Papain is a plant enzyme (enzyme). An enzyme is a protein “catalyst” in biochemical reactions. Papain is extracted from the “melon tree,” which we know as “papaya.”
- Appearance: white powder with a characteristic odor. Country of origin: China pH level: 3-12 Solubility: in water, in water-salt solutions, methyl and ethyl solutions (70%). Temperature: 50-60 °С Enzyme activity: 51,600 units. for 1 gr Raw materials: papaya juice Method of obtaining: juice fractionation, crystallization. Synonyms: papain, papainase, papaine, papayotin, vegetable pepsin.
The fruit of the plant is similar in structure, shape and composition to a melon. The highest activity of papain is observed in the berries of the plant. Ripe fruits contain less papain than green ones.
In addition to papaya, papin is found in mangoes, bananas, kiwi, and pineapples.
Papain is a proteolytic enzyme. A distinctive property of such enzymes is their ability to break down proteins.
The action of the enzyme papain is compared to pepsin, which is produced by the human stomach. Pepsin works with animal proteins in an acidic environment. Another enzyme, trypsin, acts in the alkaline range. Papain works with proteins, fats, carbohydrates in almost any environment.
Uses of papain:
- Food industry: clarification of drinks, improvement of meat products (meat softening), in cheese making, winemaking and brewing (stabilizer), leather processing; Treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (gastritis, eczema) and spine (regeneration of connective tissue); Anthelmintic (juice); Treatment of burns; Gentle cleaning of contact lenses.
Cosmetic uses of papain
A synonym for papain is “biological scalpel.” It acts only on dead tissue and cleanses the surface of the skin. Living tissues produce substances that block papain.
The enzyme papain simultaneously accelerates wound healing and destroys painful microorganisms. Burns, bedsores, and wounds heal much faster.
In home cosmetics, papain is used for deep and gentle cleansing of the skin. It can be used in the care of sensitive skin. It is also suitable for skin with rosacea (spider veins, “stars”).
Papain is active in acidic, neutral, alkaline environments. The “working” pH value is 3-12. A favorable indicator is pH 5-8. In the range from 5 to 7.5 pH accelerates the hydrolysis of proteins and peptides.
Papain is active even at high temperatures. Optimal operating temperature up to 60?С.
Cosmetic properties of papain
1. Cleansing
Papain removes dead skin cells without damaging living areas. The cleansing is deep, but careful, gentle, without abrasives. Peeling with papain is recommended even for sensitive skin.
2. Anti-inflammatory
The antibacterial property of papain will help relieve inflammation. With papain, damaged tissues are restored more actively. Papain acts on burns, wounds, bedsores, including those with pus.
3. Anti-cellulite
In anti-cellulite care, papain, in combination with physical activity and proper nutrition, has an excellent effect on the appearance of the skin. Mainly used in anti-cellulite serums.
4. Anti-aging
By removing dead cells, papain smoothes wrinkles and evens out the microrelief. Enhanced regeneration promotes rejuvenation. The complexion and overall appearance of the skin improves significantly.
5. Slower hair growth
Actively used in post-depilation products. Papain destroys keratin. Thus, it prevents hair growth.
6. Eliminates hyperkeratosis
Papain copes with excessive compaction of the stratum corneum. Successfully fights calluses, corns, etc.
7. Elimination of pigmentation
Papain removes the top layer of pigmentation. The skin brightens, there are fewer freckles and age spots.
Papain is ideal for:
- Enzyme peelings; Anti-cellulite products; Aftershave products.
A small dosage of papain is beneficial, and the affordable price of papain pleases home cosmetics specialists.
Input percentage: 1—10%
- 1-2% product after hair removal; 3-5% care for problem skin; 4-7% cleansers, toothpastes, ubtans; up to 10% peelings, anti-cellulite series (we start peelings with 1%, a sensitivity test is required).
Storage: in a cold (below 4?С) and dry (air humidity not higher than 60) place.
